Atropine Sulfate 0.01% Controls the Progression of Myopia in Children

Nowadays, with the rapid development of the digital age, children are exposed to electronic devices at a very early age. While this brings many positive benefits, it is also accompanied by an increasing number of children developing eye conditions. According to forecasts by the World Health Organization, by 2050, up to 50% of the world’s population could suffer from myopia. One of the widely applied solutions to control the progression of myopia is the use of eye drops containing Atropine.

School myopia is spreading rapidly, with the number of children of school age affected increasing rapidly. During the development stage, the risk of increasing myopia in children’s eyes is unavoidable, so applying myopia control measures is extremely necessary. Tropine eye drops containing Atropine sulfate 0.01% help control and slow down the progression of myopia in children.

Note: Atropine 0.01% is not used to cure myopia; that is, this solution cannot reverse myopia. The purpose of Tropine is to prevent the worsening of myopia in children.

Outstanding Advantages of Tropine

  • Effective in controlling the increase in myopia in children. The product meets CE standards for circulation in the European market.
  • Safe for children aged 6 years and older with myopia and progressive myopia.
  • Convenient to use with a compact-sized bottle.
  • Cost-effective.

What is Atropine?

Atropine is an anticholinergic active ingredient. Atropine works by non-selectively antagonizing Muscarinic receptors. In recent years, with many scientific studies and clinical practice, Atropine has been proven effective in controlling the increase in myopia in children. Low-concentration Atropine (concentration < 0.1%) is now favored in treatment.

What is the Mechanism of Tropine Eye Drops?

The goal of controlling the progression of myopia

Tropine eye drops slow the progression of myopia and the rate of increase in axial length of the eye. An increase in axial length corresponds to an increase in myopia, leading to severe consequences such as retinal damage and potential blindness in the future.

Atropine’s Mechanism of Action

  • Adjusts biochemical and cellular processes, including the transport of ions in retinal cells.
  • Causes biochemical changes in the pigment epithelium and choroid.
  • Limits scleral remodeling and stimulates growth.
  • Regulates the growth of the eyeball and the refractive power of the eye.

Some Considerations When Using Tropine Ophthalmic Solution

  • The recommended age for effective use is from 6 to 18 years old, with myopia progression of at least -0.5 Diopters within the previous 6 months.
  • When using Tropine, blurred near vision in the morning due to pupil dilation is common, with effects varying according to eye color. This effect typically subsides 1-2 hours after waking. The reason is that low-concentration Atropine affects pupil size, accommodation ability, and near vision to some extent. No systemic side effects have been recorded, and allergic reactions are extremely rare.
  • Tropine eye drops should be used according to the doctor’s prescription. When children have myopia, parents need to have their children’s vision checked at reputable specialized facilities and follow the doctor’s treatment regimen to monitor the child’s eye condition accurately.
  • The product does not prevent myopia but only reduces the rate of increase in myopia.
  • The effect of reducing the rate of increase in myopia by Atropine sulfate is generally based on inhibiting the development of axial length. In adults (aged 18 and over), axial length is considered complete. Therefore, the product is likely ineffective for this group.
  • Parents need to learn about the active ingredient Atropine sulfate, consult with and follow the expert’s instructions before using Tropine myopia control eye drops for children.

Uses of Tropine Eye Drops

Tropine Myopia Control Eye Drops help control and slow down the progression of myopia in children.

How to Use Tropine Eye Drops

Instill 1-2 drops into the eye each day before going to bed (the appropriate time helps patients avoid unwanted effects). However, the exact time of instillation is not too important.

Recent studies have shown that a concentration of Atropine 0.01% does not significantly affect pupil size and accommodation, and side effects are almost nonexistent.

Use Tropine 0.01% for at least 6 months to allow the doctor to assess its effectiveness, continuing use for up to 2 years thereafter. If myopia progression resumes, repeat the treatment as described.

Target Users

The product is most effective for people with myopia and progressive myopia aged 6 to 18 years old.

No research evaluations are available for children under 6 years old.

Side Effects

  • Acute systemic effects: Adverse effects such as tachycardia, mood changes, dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, or rash are always reported with high-concentration Atropine, but at a low concentration of 0.01%, they are very rare. In all studies with Atropine 0.01%, no cases have been encountered.
  • With a very small concentration of Atropine—only 0.01%—unwanted effects on the eyes are minimized, with recorded adverse effects being local irritation, allergic dermatitis (less than 1% rate), and allergic conjunctivitis.

Note: Stop using and notify your doctor of any side effects you may encounter when using TROPINE 0.01%.

Storage

  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Store upright below 30°C, in a dry place, away from light.
